A Tradition Like No Other. . .

masters.jpg

Alright. . .so it’s a weak picture but I have to tell you. It’s tougher than I thought it would be to find the picture that sums up Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters Tournament. What I did find at Wikipedia was a member list. Wow. . .read through that list and see if you recognize any names. (Jack Welch, Bill Gates, Larry Bossidy) Crazy names.

Anyway. . .I don’t think I can explain to you how I feel everytime this tournament rolls around. I’m serious. Tight in the chest, short of breath, it’s not the actual tournament of course, but the course itself. The history, the memories it is indeed a “Tradition like no other. . . The Masters.”

I’ll never forget the first time I was even close to the club in Augusta. I’m driving down Washington (Blvd, Road, Drive) something, in Augusta on my way to promote a concert there. It was Spring of ’95. I’m driving along in my ’94 Chevy S-10 pickup when out of the corner of my eye I saw a very simple, unassuming sign that simply said, “Augusta National Golf Club“. Literally like jumping in freezing cold water take your breath away. . .and then it was over. . .like that. I mean, what am I going to do? Just take a drive down Magnolia Lane? Sure, no one would have stopped me.

I’ve never been. Certainly not to play, but not even to the tournament. It’s just never worked out. I will go though. I absolutely will go and one day, and this thought truly just hit me. . .I really think I’ll play a round there. I’ve had so many of my other dreams in life come true. . .why not this one?

If you’re not a golf fan, watch some of The Masters this week. Really, if you don’t watch baseball, at least watch the Yankees v. Redsox. If you don’t watch football, at least watch Denver v. Kansas City and if you don’t watch golf. . . at least watch Sunday in Augusta. It’s all you really need to see.
